uninstalling vista

Uninstalling Vista

Vista is having to many problems on my machine. Is there a simple way to uninstall and go back to XP or do I have to format and start all over?

Unfortunately yes :o( Format completley :o(

If you installed XP and Vista in a dual boot partition, yes, you can format Vista's partition from within XP, but if installed it on the XP Partition, I am afraid its a complete format. You have to boot from your XP CD to do so. -- -- Andre Windows Connected | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta

But what will happen to the dual boot? After i installed Vista, i noticed that the dual boot screen is not the same as XP's. What will happen if i format Vista's partition from within XP? Will the dual boot screen be gone? Or will it still be there?

Probably you won't need to reformat your disk. Maybe XP's "diskpart" or another hard disk utility provided with XP may recreate the boot sector and do the job, as long as the original XP's boot files (NTDETECT.COM, BOOT.INI and ntldr) are there (you may need to extract them from your XP CD-ROM).

The way to uninstall is simple. Just use PartitionMagic and convert NTFS filesystem to FAT32 then erase windows folders on hard drive and next run the XP rescue console and fix things that are responsible for booting XP. Artur

Vista does not use boot.ini. Download VistaBootPro to the XP system and use it to edit the BCD store to remove the entry for Vista.

See my post below about restoring your original MBR and boot sector. After that's done, just delete the "Boot" folder, bootmgr, bootsector.bak, and boot.bak. However, if VistaBootPRO will do all this (and I have NO experience using it for this purpose), why not download it and use it?

Another way:
From XP CMD prompt: <drive letter of the VISTA DVD>:\boot\bootsect /nt52 <drive letter of XP>: Note space between nt52 and drive letter
or (long explanation)
"How to clean the Vista install.
Step by step.
1. Boot to XP 2. got to a CMD prompt ( start --> run --> type cmd and press OK (or run) 3. in cmd window type “cd\boot” (without the quotes!) 4. put DVD from Vista in DVD drive 5. don’t let install run close that screen (red X right top) 6. type “X:\boot\bootsect /nt52 c:” (where X is the drive letter from the DVD reader) 7. reboot the PC it should load XP by default now (entry’s from Vista are gone) 8. after reboot delete the folder boot in your XP drive (it is in the root of the drive) 9. you may delete all the files ending at .BAK in the root also 10. that’s all to do to clean out 11. Format the partition holding Vista to get a clean install again
Now you are ready to give the new version a clean start."

boot.ini file from another machine. It might work if the number and types of HDs in that machine are identical to yours, but Setup created this file for your particular machine. If you're down to a nonbootable machine, and you have NO backup of boot.ini, it wouldn't hurt to try copying such a file (in Recovery Console), but it may not work. If you truly have no backup of this file, you may need to do a repair of XP from a bootable XP CD, hopefully one slipstreamed with SP2.

Fixboot rewrites the boot sector, it won't replace boot.ini if it is really gone. (although fixboot followed by a fixmbr might be required to remove the bcd boot manager if you havent doen it already)
Repairing the OS is kind of using a sledgehammer to kill a flea..if the boot.ini is really gone (which is pretty weird) you can rewrite it by booting from the XP cd to recovery console and running the command bootcfg /rebuild The pc will find your Xp install and ask you if you want to add it. I wasn't giving the OP directions to actually do a Repair Install of the OS, just giving him directions on how to access the Repair Console, from which he would issue any boot-repair utility commands.

if the boot.ini is really gone (which is pretty weird) you can rewrite it by booting from the XP cd to recovery console and running the command bootcfg /rebuild The pc will find your Xp install and ask you if you want to add it. Thank you, "Bones".
Apparently, I gave the wrong instructions.
I just assumed that "fixboot" would actually rewrite boot.ini.
My only experience with fixing a boot volume was when I removed Linux from my computer, and ran "fixmbr" to remove the LILO loader and return the XP Boot menu. Since then, I've pretty much been giving the same advice I found worked for me.
I guess if boot.ini is nowhere to be found, it would be kind of hard to return the XP boot menu by issing the command "fixmbr", although it did work for me to remove the LILO loader and return the XP boot menu.
Anyway, just trying to get the OP to DO ANYTHING but whine over and over.

Boot
XP from the XP installer disk, choose the first opportunity to "Repair", go to the Repair Console, then type "fixboot" <ENTER>. This should rewrite your XP boot loader.

yes the boot.ini file is gone. well, at least from where it was last located. would the vista installation moved it to a new location?

the file on my xp machine seems to be gone as well. the only file found in the search was boot.ini.backup and it was in the folder c:\windows\pss

So, Steve, try POSTING the contents of THIS file to this thread. Perhaps we will be able to let you know if it it really reflects your true XP boot setup.
If it does, all you will have to do is move the file from where it is now to C:\ and rename it as "boot.ini".
For some reason or another, I do not have a "C:\Windows\pss" folder, so was unable to check if I also have such a file. In my case, it would be a generic file, not one which I had edited. Perhaps I've not yet edited boot.ini.

So,
LOOK FOR THE FILE!!!.
Enter
"boot.ini" as the search term in XP Search, and make sure you set Search to check in hidden and system folders.

haha that's actually funny because a lot of my boot record/sector experience comes from linux as well...although most of mine was because I kept playing with LILO or Grub and messing something up and had to rewrite the MBR a few dozen times :) I do a lot of work with XP but you rarely have to rewrite the MBR or boot sector in XP, unless you are dual booting of course..or until now with Vista using a very different boot method

Fixboot rewrites the boot sector, it won't replace boot.ini if it is really gone. (although fixboot followed by a fixmbr might be required to remove the bcd boot manager if you havent doen it already)
Repairing the OS is kind of using a sledgehammer to kill a flea..
Load identifier is whatever descriptive text you want to call the install, then for load options type in /fastdetect this will rebuild your boot.ini file
Since then, I've pretty much been giving the same advice I found worked
